Causes
The cause of piriformis syndrome results from the compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. What causes this compression is not fully known, but it is believed that muscle spasms in the piriformis muscle, tightening and/or swelling of the muscle, and/or bleeding of the muscle may be the cause of the sciatic nerve becoming compressed.
