Piriformis Syndrome

Diagnosis

To diagnosis piriformis syndrome a physical exam is done and an in-depth medical history of the symptoms are considered. During the physical exam Dr. Sammarone will examine the hip and legs to check if pain in the lower back and lower extremities is present with movement. When asking the patient's medical history, Dr. Sammarone will ask the patient to describe the type of pain, what makes the pain better or worse, and how long the symptoms have been present.

Additional testing, such as an X-ray or MRI, may be done to rule out other conditions that may have similar symptoms as  piriformis syndrome. These two imaging studies do not show if the sciatic nerve is being irritated by the piriformis muscle.
