Treatment for piriformis syndrome ranges from applying ice to the affect area to receiving steroid injections.
These treatments vary depending on the intensity and duration of the pain. Below are possible treatments:
Some patients may feel relief by applying ice and/or heat. When using ice or heat, apply it to the affected area for 20 minutes, repeating this every 2 to 4 hours as needed. This may help reduce inflammation and pain.
Numerous stretches, such as hamstrings and hip extensors, may help decrease pain associated with the piriformis muscle. Range of motion exercises are also recommended to help decrease muscle spasm.
A corticosteroid injection is suggested if the above treatments do not help reduce pain. The steroid injection is applied to affected area to help reduce inflammation and pain.
